Fitting first and second-floor windows is far safer and quicker from a scaffold, especially with heavy double or triple glazed units, bay windows and sash windows. Many installers will only quote upstairs work if scaffolding is provided.
Window scaffolds are usually short hires – often a week or two – so the erection and dismantling make up most of the cost.
What scaffold set-up you need
- A single elevation with a working lift below the upstairs windows.
- Bay windows need the scaffold to step out around the bay.
- Sash window restoration may need the scaffold for longer while frames are repaired.
How much does it cost?
A short two-week front scaffold on a two-storey terrace or semi is often £550–£950 in the South East.

Tips
- Line up any fascia, gutter or painting work for the same visit.
- Ask the scaffolder for a two-week price – it can be a little cheaper than the standard four weeks.
